Archbishop of Ternopil and Kremenets Sergiy was born of December 4, 1951, in the village of Dolyniany, Khotyn district of the Chernivtsi region in a priest's family.  

In 1967 he graduated from secondary school in the Kitsman district, of the Chernivtsi region.  In 1970 upon graduation from the Medical School he received a diploma of primary health worker. Throughout 1970-1971 he worked in the district hospital. From 1971 till 1973 he did his military service in Chernivtsi.  On July 1, 1973 he was ordained deacon and was appointed the first deacon of the Holy Dormition Cathedral of Smolensk.   

Since 1975 he executed functions of secretary of the Smolensk Diocesan Administration.   

In 1976 he was elevated to the rank of the protodeacon and confirmed in the office of the secretary.   

In 1983 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary.  In May 1985 he was admitted to brethren of the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra, where on December 6 of the same year he was tonsured monk. In 1986 he was elevated to the rank of archdeacon.   

On August 28, 1990 he was ordained hieromonk and was appointed Dean of the Pochayiv Lavra.   

In February 1991 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite, and on February 17 he was consecrated as Bishop of Ternopil and Kremenets.  He is a graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1999 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.  


Activity at the Cathedra

Spiritual education work 

· for activation of the educational work in the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra the assemblies of  Orthodox youth with participation of the diocesan clergy;

· there is a library at the diocesan administration whose readers are the inhabitants of Ternopil belonging different confessions, interested in the Orthodox literature;

· the diocese is engaged in publishing work. On the quarterly basis the magazine "Ternopillya Pravoslavne" is published, its editor-in-chief being Archbishop Sergiy;

· the diocesan clergy attends penitentiary institutions where they perform prayer services, officiate Sacraments of Confession and Eucharist for prisoners, the graduates of the Kremenets Choirmaster School hold spiritual concerts;

· in the diocese the Sunday schools for children and adults function, where the attention is focused on the study of the Law of God;

· Archbishop Sergiy often pilgrims to the holy places of Jerusalem, the Holy Mount Athos and of Russia, from where he brings painted icons for churches and parishes;

· Educational work is carried out with personnel assets of the Security Department of the MIA of Ukraine and with soldiers of active obligated service in the local military units. The Soldiers come to confession and take the Sacrament. 

Recreation: in the summer period the trips to the children's camps at the seaside and to Carpathians are organized.  The recreation is of spiritual and educational character.  The day begins and ends with a prayer. The children are read the spiritual literature, handicraft, they are ingrained love of labour.
