USA. UOC Representatives Participated in Opening of Exhibition “Glory of Ukraine: Icons of the ХІ-ХІХ centuries
On June 18 at the Museum
of Biblical Art MOBIA
"MOBIA" (New-York,
USA) an exhibition
"Glory of Ukraine: Holy Icons of the ХІ-ХІХ
centuries" was opened, where museum objects from the
collection of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical Cultural Reserve were
presented.
The exhibition of the Ukrainian Icon in the USA is taking place at the blessing
of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine in the
framework of the International exhibition project "Ukraine to the World" and
will be held from June 3 2010 till May 2011 in three museums of the USA: Museums
of the biblical art MOBIA (New-York, USA), International Center of Meridian (Washington,
Columbia district, USA) and Jocelyn Museum of Art (Omaha, Nebraska, USA).
Taking part in opening of an exhibition were representatives of the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church: Deputy Chair of the Department
for External Church Relations His Grace Alexander, Bishop of
Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy and Chair of the Synodal Department "Church and Culture"
hegumeness Seraphima Shevchyk.
The project organizers are the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine and
the Foundation for International Arts and Education (Bethesda,
Maryland, USA)
at the support of the Ukrainian Embassy in the USA
and the Embassy of the USA in
Ukraine.
The
exhibition presents the icons of the XІV-ХІХ centuries, coming from the different regions of
Ukraine - Volyn, Halychyna, Kyiv, Poltava and Chernihiv regions and give a possibility
to observe evolution of the Ukrainian sacred art starting from the post-Byzantine
period till the period of rise of the national art - the age of baroque, fully
and comprehensively displaying all variety of the Ukrainian icon painting.
The icons present a wide circle of iconographic variants of the sacred art. There
are images of Christ, Theotokos, the Twelve Great Feasts, the icons of the most
popular selected saints, copies of the
wonderworking icons of Ukraine.
A separate group of exhibits are the records referring to the history of the
oldest monastery in Eastern Europe - Kyiv Caves Monastery, the shrine of the orthodox
world.
The exposition also
presents church appliances - crosses, communion cups, tabernacles, liturgical
cloths and books in precious frames, expanding our view of the orthodox
traditions and rites and represent most fully the national cultural heritage
preserved.
