KYIV. Historical Library of Lavra Damaged by Fire

June 13, 2008

The employees of the Ministry of Emergencies put out a fire which broke out yesterday about 17.00 in one of the administrative buildings of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical Reserve.

As UNIAN informs with reference to the Ministry Kyiv headquarters, the fire broke out on the premises of the State Historical Library of Ukraine, being caused by a stroke of lightning.

As a result of a strong electric discharge the inner space of the dome crowning the building set on fire, the ForUm informs. After the ignition the employees of the museum were evacuated.

8 emergency response units of the Ministry of Emergencies and 11 units of rescue technique expeditiously arrived to the incident location on call.  At 17:30 the fire was brought under control, and at 17:40 it was completely extinguished.

Now the damages are being calculated. The books, including the rare ones, were not damaged by the fire or water, but the dome requires immediate restoration.

The book fund of the Historical Library amounts to about 1 million of units - there the unique collection of literature is being kept: precious books, samples of the print art. Among the editions preserved at the library there are the Bible of Ostrog, published by Ivan Fiodorov in 1581, a collection of the Lavra publications, Synopsis - a first history textbook published in 1674, 1678 and 1680.
