Commentary of Department for External Church Relations of the UOC on the information on the web site www.cerkva.info

In reference to the information on the web site www.cerkva.info, according to which the Superior of the Monastery Cetetsuia Negru Voda (Bishopric of Argeş and Muscel) protosingel Modest visited the residence of "Patriarch" Philaret (Denisenko) and, as it was reported, "on behalf of the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church assured His All Holiness Patriarch Philaret that the Orthodox Church of Romania supports the pursuit of the UOC of the Kyivan Patriarchate for establishing the local Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church", the Department for External Church Relations of the UOC turned to the Department for External Church Relations of the Romanian Patriarchate for explanations.

An official of the Department patriarchal counsellor father Michael Tica gave the following commentary on the issue. As he explained, protosingel Modest is not authorized to make such declarations and act on behalf of His Beatitude Patriarch of Romania.

If the declarations mentioned were really made, they fully contradict the position of the Romanian Orthodox Church, which recognizes in Ukraine only the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine at the head. The patriarchal counsellor expressed pity on the self-activity of the Romanian representative and informed that the investigation of his actions started, the results of the investigation mentioned will be made known to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the UOC archimandrite Cyril (Hovorun)
