Bishop Iriney was born on June 11, 1963 in the village of Ropotukha, Uman district of the Cherkassy Region. After the birth of the child the family moved to the village of Ladyzhinka of that district.

Throughout 1970 -1980 he studied in the secondary school of Ladyzhinka.

In 1980-1981 he worked in the organisation "Kyivmiskbud".

In the autumn of 1981 he entered the preparation department of the Kyiv Construction Institute, and in 1982 he was enlisted as the first year student. In 1983 he left the institute at his own will and entered the Moscow Theological Seminary.

In the autumn of 1984 he entered the monastic community of the Holy Trinity St.Sergius Lavra. On February 26, 1985 in the Trinity Cathedral of the monastery he was tonsured a monk with the name Iriney after the Holy Hierarch Irenaeus of Lyons by archimandrite Alexiy (Kutepov), now Archbishop of Tula and Belev.

On April 6, 1985 he was ordained to the holy diaconate by Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Serapion (Fadeev) in the Holy Dormition Cathedral of Vladimir. On November 30, 1986 he was ordained to the holy priesthood in the Refectory Church of the Monastery by Archbishop of Cheboksary and Chuvashiya Varnava (Kedrov).

In 1987 after completion of his studies in the Seminary he was assigned to the brotherhood of the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Monastery by the Educational Committee of the Holy Synod of the ROC. In the spring of 1991 he was transferred to the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

In1992 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy and taught in the Kyiv Theological Seminary.

From September, 1996 he bore obedience of the Dean of Lavra.

On December 26, 2006 he defended the candidate's thesis "History of the Orthodox Female Monasticism in Ukraine in the 20th century".

Bishop consecration ceremony of Vladyka was held on June 10, 2007 in the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
