Bishop of
Bilgorod-Dnistrovskyi Oleksiy was born on September 27, 1972 in the city of Dnipropetrovsk in the
family of salaried workers.
In 1979 he entered the
secondary school No.106 of Dnipropetrovsk; he studied there for 8 years until
1987.
In 1987 he became the first
year student of the Dnipropetrovsk Republican Basic Medical School No.1, from
which he graduated in 1991with specialty of medical assistant.
In 1991 he enrolled in the
department "Economics of Enterprise" of the Dnipropetrovsk State University,
and completed his studies in 1997, having acquired specialty of economist. At the same time he studied in the Odesa
Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1994.
The same year he entered
the Moscow Theological Academy, from which he graduated in 1999.
In 2005 he graduated from the
Odesa National Academy of Law, with specialty of lawyer.
In 1992 he entered the
Odesa Holy Dormition Monastery as novice.
On December 20 of the same year Metropolitan of Odesa and Izmayil
Agafangel tonsured him a monk with the name Oleksiy, in honour of the Holy
Hierarch Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, the Wonderworker.
On January 3, 1993 he was
ordained to the rank of hierodeacon, and January 7 - ordained to the rank of
hieromonk. The same year on the request of Primate of the UOC His Beatitude Metropolitan
of Kyiv and All Ukraine Volodymyr the Patriarch of Alexandria elevated
hieromonk Oleksiy to the rank of Hegumen.
On October 10, 1994 he was appointed Vice-Rector of the Odesa
Theological Seminary and the teacher of Old and New Testament for the first
year students. In 1999 with the
blessing of Metropolitan of Odesa and Izmayil Agafangel - Chairman of the
Educational Committee to the Holy Synod of the UOC, hegumen Oleksiy was
entrusted teaching canonical right for the students of the 4th year
of the OTS.
On April 7, 1995, on the
feast of Holy Annunciation, Metropolitan of Odesa and Izmayil Agafangel elevated
hegumen Oleksiy to the rank of archimandrite at the Divine Liturgy in the Holy
Dormition Cathedral of Odesa.
In 1997 he was appointed Dean
of the Monasteries of the Odesa Diocese.
In 1998 he became the presiding priest of the Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie
Church in Odesa, at the French Boulevard.
In 1999 by the decision of
the Holy Synod of the UOC he was appointed Superior of the Odesa Holy Dormition
Stauropeghial Monastery.
In 2000 he was granted the
right of wearing the second cross at the Divine Liturgy by His Beatitude
Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Volodymyr, Primate of the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church.
On the feast of Holy
Transfiguration of Our Saviour, August 19,
2006 His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr consecrated archimandrite
Oleksiy to episcopacy as Bishop of Bilgorod-Dnistrovsky, Vicar of the Odesa
