Bishop Varnava (Filatov
Vyacheslav Jurevich) was born on April, 21, 1953 in Ashkhabad, Tadzhik Soviet Socialist Republic,
in the orthodox family.
The father and mother were
medical workers. In 1974 he moved with his family to Abkhazia in Sukhumi where he
studied icon-painting, sang in the church chorus and bore obedience of an altar
warden.
On April, 22, 1976 in the
Holy Annunciation Cathedral he was ordained to holy diaconate by Metropolitan of Sukhumi and
Abkhazia Elijah, with an
appointment to serve in the same cathedral.
In 1991 he moved to Makiyivka,
Donetsk region.
On May, 2nd, 1991 in the Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral of Lughansk he was ordained to the holy priesthood with an appointment to serve as
presiding priest in the St. John of
Kronstadt Church of
the city of Kirovskoye, Donetsk region. The same year he entered per
correspondence department of the Kyiv Theological Seminary.
On June, 1st, 1993 he was assigned clergyman of the Holy Kazan
Icon Cathedral of Makiyivka, Donetsk region. On June, 8th, 1993 he was appointed presiding priest of the St.George
Cathedral of the same city.
On January, 5, 1995 in the St.Nicholas Cathedral of Donetsk he was tonsured a monk with a name of Varnava in honour of one of the
70-ty Apostles (Name day - January, 17) by Bishop of Donetsk and Mariupol Hippolit.
From October, 22, till August, 16, 1996 he was the Dean of the Makiyivka Deanery.
On October, 11,
1996 he was elevated to the dignity of hegumen by Archbishop of Donetsk and Mariupol Hilarion. On August, 31, 1997 was elevated to the rank of
archimandrite by His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr.
From October, 27, 1998 he
was assigned member of
the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Donetsk. From March 25, 2002 - District Dean of Torez district.
On January, 24, 2007 by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church archimandrite Varnava (Filatov) was appointed Bishop of Makiyivka, Vicar of the Donetsk
Diocese.
His consecration
took place on February,
11 in the St.George
Cathedral of Makiyivka.
By decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of March, 29, 2007 he was appointed administrator
of the Diocese of Berdyansk, with the title "Bishop of Berdyansk and
Primorsk".
