Activity
From 1996 till 2005 Bishop Panteleimon (Bashchuk) was Deputy Abbot of the Holy Nativity
of the Theotokos Hermitage of Glinka, the Diocese of Sumy. In 2000 he was consecrated to episcopacy with the title "Bishop of Vasylkiv,
Vicar of the Kyiv Metropolis".
Throughout
his tenure in the Hermitage of Glinka Bishop Panteleimon restored monastic and liturgical life of the abode in accordance with
the statutes of the other coenobies. In 1996 the monastery brethren consisted
of three monks only, and in 2005 - of 20 monks.
For
provision of the monastery life Bishop Panteleimon established monastery farm, which totalled 20 head of
cattle, 20 sheep, more than 200 hens and 4 bee-hives. For cultivating of 10 Ha of land a tractor,
a truck and a car were bought.
During
Bishop Panteleimon's stay at the Hermitage of Glinka his main concern was
building and provision of amenities of the monastery churches. Thus, in the period mentioned by the efforts
of Vladyka two churches were constructed: in the name of the Holy Hierarch
Nicholas and the gate church in honour of the Iveron icon of the Mother of
God. At present the churches are
provided with everything required for the Divine service and are painted by
icon-painters.
The icons
at the iconostasis of the Iveron Church are made on the golden base with
coinage, and in the St. Nicholas Church the carved iconostasis is covered by
leaf gold.
Under the
direction of Bishop Panteleimon three chapels were built (2 of stone and one of
wood). One of the chapels is situated in
the place of appearance of the Nativity of Theotokos icon, another one - above
the monastery spring. Major repairs were
made in the building for brethren and the house of the Abbot.
18 km from
the hermitage there is a house which previously belonged to the Hermitage. This building was transferred to the
monastery by the local authorities during Bishop Panteleimon's tenure of abbot's
office.
On
Vladyka's blessing 50 km away from the hermitage in Yampol the 5-dome church
was built and the monastery metochion arranged, for which Bishop Panteleimon
contested the building of the former military commissariat.
